The woman, sheltered beneath a dark umbrella, stands out against a lively background of carriages, passers-by and architecture identifiable with central Paris. Furthermore, the wet pavement reflects lights and colours, helping to define the rainy atmosphere.
The artist, active between the end of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century, specialized in scenes of modern life and subjects set in elegant contexts. However, in this work he does not limit himself to anecdotal description; on the contrary, he focuses attention on the effects of light and chromatic vibrations. The brushwork is loose and rapid, while the contrasts between the dark tones of the umbrella and the green of the dress give prominence to the figure.
The composition is constructed with a close-up framing that enhances the gesture and expression of the protagonist. As a result, the background remains slightly blurred, suggesting the movement of the crowd beneath the rain. At the same time, the use of a small panel as support accentuates the immediacy of execution.
Therefore, “In Paris in the Rain” testifies to Giovanni Lessi’s interest in urban modernity and atmospheric effects, placing the work within the European figurative climate of the late 19th century, attentive to city life and the effects of light.
