Lady Seated on a Bench Sewing, drawing by Giovanni Boldini, 1915.

Giovanni Boldini (1842-1931), “Lady Seated on a Bench Sewing”, Nice, 1915.

The drawing “Lady Seated on a Bench Sewing” by Giovanni Boldini represents a mature and significant example of his graphic production. The work depicts a female figure captured in an everyday and intimate gesture, seated on a bench while sewing. In this context, Boldini once again demonstrates his ability for immediate and synthetic observation of reality.

During the First World War, Boldini intensified his graphic activity, favouring drawing as a rapid and essential medium. Consequently, the line appears loose, vibrant and constructed through overlaps, capable of suggesting movement and posture without resorting to meticulous definition. In particular, the figure emerges through a network of energetic and dynamic strokes, typical of his late style, conveying a sense of vitality and naturalness.

Although best known as an extraordinary portraitist of Parisian high society, Boldini always devoted attention also to scenes of everyday life. Therefore, this sheet fits coherently within his research, in which the interest in gesture and spontaneous attitude prevails over the worldly aspect. At the same time, the outdoor setting and the choice of the female subject refer to his French and Mediterranean experience.
