The series of Le Bottiglie Abitate represents one of the most iconic and poetic expressions of the design thinking of Gio Ponti, a central figure in twentieth-century Italian architecture and design. Created in 1994 by the Cooperativa Ceramica d’Imola, the series faithfully reprises the models designed by Ponti in 1950, preserving the visionary strength of the original conception intact.
The five bottles, each different in form, reliefs and sculptural details, embody Ponti’s idea of the object as a living presence, endowed with character and personality. Not simple containers, but true anthropomorphic figures, “inhabited” by signs, protuberances, stylized faces and symbolic motifs that evoke totems, fantastic architectures and ritual presences.
The result is a refined dialogue between matter, light and form, in perfect coherence with Ponti’s vision, for whom ceramics represented a privileged medium for artistic experimentation.
The complete series of Le Bottiglie Abitate is today positioned as a work on the boundary between art, design and sculpture, as well as sought after by international collectors. It emblematically synthesizes Gio Ponti’s poetics: a joyful, learned and visionary art, capable of transforming the functional object into symbolic architecture in miniature.
