The card table designed by Gio Ponti for Fratelli Reguitti, dating to the 1950s, is an elegant example of post-war Italian design, in which functionality, lightness, and attention to detail coexist in perfect balance. Ponti, one of the most influential architects and designers of the twentieth century, developed a design language founded on harmonious proportions, practicality, and formal refinement.
In this piece, the beechwood structure is distinguished by its essential lines and lightweight construction, characteristic of Italian furniture from the 1950s. However, the table is more than a purely functional object: its reversible top, with one side covered in green baize and the other in teak wood, reveals a dual purpose, conceived both for gaming and for more versatile domestic use.
Furthermore, the four removable brass ashtray holders represent a particularly significant detail. Discreetly integrated into the structure, they evoke the convivial atmosphere of the period, when a card table also served as a place for gathering and social interaction.
Fratelli Reguitti, renowned for its folding furniture and finely crafted wooden furnishings, finds here an effective dialogue with Ponti’s design vision. Overall, this table combines elegance, functionality, and modern domesticity, confirming its status as a representative example of 1950s Italian taste.
