“Piccola folla B” by Giò Pomodoro, created in 1964, belongs to a central phase of the artist’s career, marked by his interest in bronze, the rhythm of surfaces, and the construction of compact yet dynamic forms. The brother of Arnaldo Pomodoro, Giò developed an independent path within post-war Italian sculpture, focusing on the relationship between sign, space, and plastic structure.
In this work, the elongated and gently undulating form appears to emerge from a sequence of closely gathered presences, suggested rather than described. The title, “Piccola folla B” (“Small Crowd B”), indeed guides the interpretation towards the idea of a group, a multitude gathered within a confined space. However, the artist does not depict recognisable figures; instead, he translates the concept of a crowd into a continuous surface, animated by folds, reliefs, and variations of light.
Furthermore, the gilded bronze enhances the vibrant character of the sculpture. The irregularities of the material, together with subtly suggested solids and voids, create an internal movement that makes the work appear alive and constantly changing according to the viewer’s perspective.
The simple rectangular base stabilises the composition and emphasises its horizontal development. Overall, “Piccola folla B” represents a significant example of Giò Pomodoro’s artistic vision, capable of combining abstraction, plastic tension, and a reflection on collective space within an essential yet powerful form.
