The sculpture “Lovers” by Floriano Bodini, created in 1958, belongs to the early phase of the Lombard artist’s research, already oriented towards an intense reflection on the human figure and the existential condition. In fact, Bodini established himself within the panorama of Italian sculpture of the second half of the twentieth century through a strongly sculptural language, capable of merging figurative tradition and Expressionist tension.
In this work, the two figures appear closely united in a vertical and compact composition. However, the theme of the embrace is not interpreted in an idealized way; on the contrary, Bodini constructs bodies marked by irregular and vibrant matter, where the fragmented bronze surface contributes to conveying a sense of fragility and emotional tension. Moreover, the choice to elongate the proportions accentuates the sense of precariousness and at the same time strengthens the bond between the two subjects.
The sculpture clearly reveals the artist’s interest in the Lombard tradition of modelling, but also in the lesson of Medardo Rosso and twentieth-century European sculpture. Consequently, matter does not merely assume a structural function, but becomes a central expressive element. At the same time, light settles on the roughness of the bronze, creating continuous chiaroscuro contrasts.
“Lovers” represents a significant pillar of Floriano Bodini’s youthful production, as it anticipates many themes that would characterize his later path: the human relationship, psychological tension and the centrality of the body. Moreover, the publication of the work on the cover of the catalogue of the exhibition at Il Triangolo Galleria d’Arte in Cremonaconfirms the importance attributed to this work already in the years of its creation.
