“Lady with Parasol” by Flavio Bertelli belongs to the production of the Emilian artist, active between the late nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century and connected to the season of modern Italian landscape painting. Born in San Lazzaro di Savena, Bertelli developed a painting sensitive to light and atmosphere, with a language that, while starting from observation of reality, often tends towards a synthetic and vibrant rendering of nature.
In this work, executed in oil on cardboard, the subject appears to be constructed through a few essential elements: a rural setting, a female figure with a parasol and a barely suggested architectural structure. However, the scene does not aim at meticulous description. On the contrary, the artist focuses attention on the luministic impression and on the balance between chromatic patches, shadows and tonal passages.
The brushstroke appears free and immediate, with a pictorial matter capable of conveying the sensation of a moment captured from life. Moreover, the figure of the lady, small but significant, introduces a discreet narrative note, without interrupting the intimate character of the landscape.
Overall, “Lady with Parasol” represents a coherent example of Bertelli’s research, in which landscape, light and human presence coexist in a simple composition, yet rich in atmospheric sensitivity.
