“Strada di Parigi”, oil on canvas by Filippo De Pisis, 1927.

Filippo De Pisis (1896-1956), “Strada di Parigi”, 1927.

The painting “Strada di Parigi” by Filippo De Pisis, dated 1927, depicts a Parisian urban view, a central theme in De Pisis’s production during his stays in France. However, the scene is not described in a realistic manner: space is constructed through rapid applications of colour, fragmented brushstrokes, and a deliberately unstable perspective. Furthermore, the barely suggested human figures help define a sense of everyday life and transience, characteristic of the artist’s poetic vision.

From a chromatic standpoint, the painting is characterised by muted tones, with contrasts of grey, ochre, and blue that suggest an emotional rather than a topographical perception of the place. As a result, Paris becomes a mental space, filtered through the painterly sensibility of the artist.

De Pisis, both poet and painter, is a key figure of twentieth-century Italian art, initially associated with Metaphysical Painting and later with a freer and more lyrical approach. In particular, during the 1920s, he developed a personal style based on immediacy of execution and attention to atmospheric effects. Therefore, “Strada di Parigi” represents a significant example of Filippo De Pisis Parisian period, in which urban observation and painterly introspection merge into a coherent visual language.
