Ferdinando Meccani for Atelier Meccani, “Micene” Cabinet, Cascina – Pisa, 1978.

Ferdinando Meccani (1937-2018), “Micene” cabinet, 1978.

The “Micenecabinet, created in 1978 by Ferdinando Meccani for Atelier Meccani, is a significant example of Italian experimental design, developed during the 1970s at the intersection of craftsmanship and design. During this period, a number of independent Italian ateliers distinguished themselves through limited-production furniture characterised by exceptional materials and a sophisticated, highly individual formal language.

Structurally, the cabinet is entirely crafted in solid wengé, a prized wood appreciated for its rich dark colour, compact grain, and remarkable durability. The piece is organised around eight doors and eight internal shelves, complemented by a central drawer, providing generous and rationally arranged storage. However, functionality never overshadows the formal qualities of the work, which remain central to its conception.

A distinctive feature of the “Micene” cabinet is the presence of mother-of-pearl inlays, used with restraint to emphasise the geometric lines of the composition. Furthermore, the decoration is never purely ornamental; instead, it contributes to a rigorous visual balance based on symmetry, vertical divisions, and references to ancient art, already suggested by the title itself. In this sense, the reference to Mycenaean civilisation evokes a dialogue between historical memory and modern design.

Therefore, this cabinet should not be interpreted merely as a piece of furniture, but as an authorial design object, embodying a period of Italian creativity deeply committed to construction quality, formal experimentation, and high-level artisanal production.
