The sculpture “Ascent” by Giuliano Giuliani, created in 1996, presents itself as a work of strong verticality, constructed through a slender form that seems to develop from bottom to top with continuous movement. The title itself guides the interpretation of the work: the idea of ascent is translated into a dynamic, curvilinear structure, almost suspended between natural impulse and sculptural construction.
Made of chestnut wood, the sculpture fully enhances the qualities of the material. The grain in fact follows the development of the form and helps to strengthen the sense of movement, while the polished surface highlights the compactness and warm colour of the wood. Moreover, the large size of the work accentuates its relationship with space, transforming the sculpture into an autonomous and strongly architectural presence.
The form, although abstract, recalls natural elements such as a leaf, a flame or a sail. However, the work is not limited to a simple organic evocation: on the contrary, it constructs a precise balance between visual lightness and material solidity. The metal base, essential and functional, allows the wooden structure to emerge with greater clarity.
“Ascent” therefore represents a significant example of contemporary Italian sculpture, in which matter, form and movement interact directly. The work combines monumentality and synthesis, clearly conveying an upward tension, consistent with the meaning evoked by the title.
