"Stories of Miracles", paintings from the circle of Corrado Giaquinto.

Corrado Giaquinto (1703-1765), circle of, “Stories of Miracles”.

The cycle “Stories of Miracles”, referred to the circle of Corrado Giaquinto, belongs to the context of eighteenth-century Italian painting, characterized by strong attention to religious narrative and the theatrical rendering of sacred episodes. Giaquinto, an Apulian painter active between Rome, Turin, Naples and Madrid, was one of the protagonists of Italian Rococo, known for luminous compositions, elegant movements and a rapid yet controlled painting style.

The seven paintings present different scenes of miraculous interventions, constructed through groups of figures, angelic apparitions, saints and figures gathered in attitudes of devotion or wonder. However, the interest of the ensemble lies not only in the religious subject, but also in the compositional variety of the individual canvases, which alternate more solemn moments with more animated episodes.

Moreover, the presence of flying figures, broad gestures and luminous contrasts recalls a fully eighteenth-century language, close to the decorative and scenographic culture of that time. The sacred narrative is in fact rendered through dynamic images, designed to engage the viewer’s gaze and guide the reading of the events.

On the other hand, the reference to the circle of Giaquinto allows the cycle to be placed within a pictorial culture marked by chromatic lightness, movement and devotional theatricality. Overall, “Stories of Miracles” represents an ensemble of particular interest, capable of combining religious function, decorative quality and eighteenth-century narrative taste.
