This abstract sculpture in glazed stoneware, created in 1968 by Carlo Zauli, represents one of the highest moments of the artist’s sculptural research at the height of his maturity. The work belongs to the period in which Zauli definitively moved beyond the decorative dimension of ceramics, affirming it as an autonomous language of contemporary sculpture.
The form, essential and compact, is articulated around a central void that assumes a structural and conceptual role. However, the solid is not annulled. On the contrary, it constantly dialogues with the internal opening, generating a measured balance between mass and space. Moreover, the glazed stoneware surface presents a controlled material texture, obtained through careful workmanship and skilfully calibrated firing.
From a stylistic point of view, the work reflects Zauli’s dialogue with Informal and post-Informal abstraction, while maintaining a strong personal identity. In fact, the sculpture does not aim at gestural effects, but at a rigorous construction of form, based on proportions and volumetric relationships. At the same time, the choice of stoneware gives solidity and permanence, central elements in the artist’s poetics.
Within the context of the production of the 1960s, this sculpture testifies to Carlo Zauli’s decisive contribution to the renewal of Italian ceramics, placing it in continuity with the research of contemporary European sculpture.
