The mirror by Carlo Bugatti represents a significant example of his production between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a period in which the artist developed an absolutely personal and recognizable decorative language. A central figure in the European applied arts, Bugatti in fact stands out for his ability to merge Orientalist suggestions, Symbolist taste and artisanal research, creating furniture conceived as true works of art.
In this work, the vertical structure of the mirror is constructed through a complex combination of materials: wood, ebonized elements, decorated parchment and hammered copper coexist in a refined and highly scenographic balance. However, what is most striking is the geometric construction of the whole, characterized by rigorous lines and circular motifs that frame the central mirror, creating an almost architectural effect.
Moreover, the insertion of the zinc flower-holder basin introduces an additional decorative function, typical of Bugatti’s conception of furniture as a total element, capable of interacting with the space and with the surrounding objects. The parchment-covered surfaces, often decorated with essential motifs and metal details, help to define a language far removed from the more conventional European tradition.
On the other hand, Carlo Bugatti’s production occupies a unique position in the international Art Nouveau panorama, thanks to the continuous experimentation with forms and materials. Overall, this mirror fully highlights his ability to combine function, decoration and formal invention, transforming an everyday furnishing element into a presence of strong visual and stylistic impact.
