Created in 1974, “Composition with Trumpet” testifies to a mature phase in the research of Bruno Saetti, a Bolognese artist active between the Italian twentieth century and the post-war period. In this work, in fact, his synthetic language clearly emerges, founded on formal balance and chromatic intensity. However, the choice of fresco on canvas is not a secondary detail: on the contrary, it reveals the desire to transfer a mural technique into an autonomous format, maintaining the opaque and compact quality of the surface.
The composition is structured around the presence of the trumpet, an element that, while recognizable, is simplified into essential forms. Moreover, the spatial construction appears calibrated, with fields of colour interacting with one another without superfluous overlaps. Consequently, the work does not aim at naturalistic description, but rather at a poetic synthesis of the subject.
The artist, trained within the tradition of Italian figuration, developed over time a personal style, influenced both by mural painting and by a controlled use of colour. Therefore, in the 1970s his production is distinguished by a solid yet simplified figuration, in which each element maintains a precise function. At the same time, the autograph indication on the reverse, inviting not to varnish the painting, confirms the artist’s attention to the original material rendering.
In conclusion, “Composition with Trumpet” represents a coherent example of Bruno Saetti’s maturity, where technique, form and content find a measured and conscious balance.
