The work “Dalmatian Motif”, created in 1949 by Anton Zoran Mušič, conveys with extreme synthesis one of the most recurring and identifying themes of the artist’s production. The subject, composed of figures on horseback arranged in sequence, refers directly to the imagery of Dalmatia, Mušič’s land of origin and a constant source of inspiration throughout his career.
From a stylistic point of view, the work is characterized by an essential narrative, constructed through light colour fields, muted colours and a measured line. In particular, the choice of tempera allows the artist to obtain opaque and controlled surfaces, functional to a suspended and almost archaic representation. Consequently, the scene does not take the form of a realistic description, but rather of a symbolic evocation of a collective memory.
In the post-war period, Mušič developed an increasingly personal language, distant from any form of rhetoric. Therefore, works such as this reflect a desire for formal reduction and concentration on compositional rhythm, evident in the horizontal arrangement of the figures and in the calibrated repetition of the motifs. At the same time, the narrative component remains legible, thanks to the iconographic clarity and chromatic sobriety.
In conclusion, “Dalmatian Motif” represents a significant testimony to the poetics of Anton Zoran Mušič, capable of combining memory, identity and formal rigour in a visual synthesis of great balance.
