With “Posing”, Alfredo Protti created one of the most representative portraits of his early artistic maturity, fully placing himself within the cultural climate of the Bolognese twentieth century between Symbolism, Decadentism and Secessionist suggestions.
The painting depicts a female figure captured in a composed and self-aware attitude, seated three-quarter view, with an absorbed and distant gaze. The studied pose, together with the elegance of the clothing and the attention to accessories, conveys an image of refined psychological introspection. The face, modelled by a warm and enveloping light, is the emotional focus of the work, while the pictorial background, treated with soft and vibrant brushstrokes, helps to create an intimate and suspended atmosphere.
From a stylistic point of view, the work clearly shows Protti’s adherence to a sensual and decorative painting, in which colour assumes a structural role. The warm tones – browns, reds and ivories – interact harmoniously with the blacks and whites of the dress, emphasizing the taste for an almost theatrical elegance, typical of his youthful production.
