With “My Family” from 1898, Alessandro Scorzoni certainly created one of the most intimate and significant works of his pictorial production. The painting assumes a value that goes well beyond the domestic dimension, taking the form of a true affective and identity declaration by the artist.
The scene depicts a bourgeois interior animated by the presence of family members, captured in a moment of silent everyday life. The composition, in fact, is constructed through a skilful play of natural light coming from the window, which articulates the planes and delicately models the figures. The faces, rendered with psychological attention, convey deep introspection, while the measured gestures suggest an atmosphere of intimate recollection.
From a stylistic point of view, moreover, the work is fully placed within late nineteenth-century emotional realism, with clear references to European interior painting and the Italian Verist tradition. However, Scorzoni avoids any descriptive complacency: the brushstroke remains free, at times vibrant, capable of translating the affective dimension of the subject rather than its mere formal representation.
Therefore, the work testifies in an exemplary way to Alessandro Scorzoni’s ability to combine compositional rigour, luminous sensitivity and human depth, making it one of his highest and most sincere achievements.
