Alessandro Mendini, “Golden Gate” table, 2008.

Alessandro Mendini (1931-2019), Table “Golden Gate”, 2008.

The “Golden Gate” table by Alessandro Mendini is an elegant and bold expression of designer furniture. With its imposing dimensions, this table combines an extra-clear sandblasted and tempered glass top with a matte lacquered wood base. Furthermore, the top is engraved with a true conceptual map conceived by Mendini himself.

The designer, born in Milan in 1931 and deceased in 2019, was one of the leading figures of Italian Postmodern and Radical Design. Working as both architect and designer, he succeeded in blending art, architecture, and everyday objects, restoring a poetic value to objects beyond their functional purpose.

In this table, Mendini transforms a furnishing element into a visual and conceptual stage: the transparent glass reveals the structure beneath, the matte lacquer finish gives it a sculptural character, and the engraved map suggests a network of meanings that extends beyond the table’s practical use. The name “Golden Gate” ideally evokes a bridge—a symbol of connection—and here the idea of the bridge shifts into the realm of language: a bridge between function and symbol, between use and thought.

This table is not merely a supporting surface, but an aesthetic statement: an invitation to reflect on the role of design as a visual and cultural language, fully in keeping with Mendini’s vision.
