“Half-length Portrait of a Noble Lady” is an oil painting attributed to Alessandro Allori, which belongs to the context of Florentine portraiture of the second half of the sixteenth century, a field in which the artist developed an elegant, controlled language strongly linked to Mannerist culture. A pupil and continuator of the tradition of Agnolo Bronzino, Allori in fact took up the attention to formal precision, the composure of the pose and the meticulous rendering of garments and ornaments.
In this work, the female figure is depicted half-length, with a firm gaze and measured attitude. However, the interest of the painting lies not only in the representation of the face, but also in the richness of the decorative apparatus. The lace collar, the hairstyle adorned with pearls and the finely worked dress in fact define the high status of the lady and reflect her aristocratic taste, typical of Medici Florence.
Moreover, the dark background focuses attention on the figure, enhancing the contrast between the pale complexion, the precious details and the complexity of the costume. The composed construction and the analytical care of the detailsare elements consistent with Mannerist portraiture, in which personal image, social decorum and representation of rank coexist in a balanced way.
