Alain Delon for Maison Jansen AD363 three-door sideboard in maple burl veneer with chrome-plated metal, brass and copper structure, 1972.

Alain Delon for Maison Jansen, AD363 three-door sideboard, 1972.

The AD363 three-door sideboard designed by Alain Delon for Maison Jansen in 1972 represents a refined example of high-end French design of the 1970s, a period in which decorative elegance and material research assumed a central role in international furniture design. Maison Jansen, the historic Parisian maison active between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, was in fact renowned for the production of sophisticated furniture intended for residences and representative interiors.

In this work, the composition is constructed through a rigorous geometric balance, defined by clean horizontal lines and by a metal structure that frames the entire volume. However, the severity of the form is softened by the richness of the materials used. The doors veneered in burr maple, characterized by a vibrant and material surface, in fact interact with the chrome-plated metal, brass and copper elements, creating a refined contrast between cool and warm tones.

Moreover, the metal finishes do not serve only a technical function, but become an integral part of the decorative design. The brass profiles and metal inserts in fact articulate the structure with architectural precision, emphasizing the compositional clarity of the piece.

On the other hand, the internal organization, with shelves and integrated drawer unit, also reflects the functional attention typical of the best design of the period. Overall, the AD363 sideboard therefore stands as a piece of furniture capable of combining material luxury, formal balance and construction quality, fully expressing the sophisticated taste of French design of the early 1970s.
