The “Taraxacum” chandelier, designed in the 1960s by Achille Castiglioni and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni for Flos, represents one of the most iconic creations of Italian design in the second half of the twentieth century. Created during a period of intense design experimentation, the model perfectly synthesizes the Castiglioni brothers’ ability to combine technical research, formal lightness, and material innovation.
The pendant lamp stands out for its particular painted metal structure covered in cocoon, an innovative material used during those years to obtain light and diffused surfaces. This special coating, sprayed onto the metal structure, creates a translucent membrane with an organic appearance, capable of filtering light in a soft and uniform way. Furthermore, the sculptural and irregular form of the chandelier recalls natural and biomorphic elements, in keeping with the name of the work itself, inspired by the dandelion.
However, behind the apparent spontaneity of the composition lies a rigorous design study. The Castiglionis in fact developed a precise balance between volumes, openings, and light diffusion, transforming the lighting fixture into a true architectural element within the domestic space.
Furthermore, the “Taraxacum” series fully reflects the experimental approach of Flos during the 1960s and 1970s. In this period in which the company collaborated with some of the most important figures in international design. Overall, this pendant lamp therefore represents an emblematic example of radically innovative Italian design. It is still appreciated today for its strong scenic presence and its original combination of function and aesthetic research.
