Modern and Contemporary Art – Sculptures
Our next appointment is Auction 96 – Modern and Contemporary Art, featuring a catalogue dedicated to painting, sculpture, photography, works on paper and artist’s multiples. In particular, the selection explores some of the principal languages of twentieth-century and contemporary art. Furthermore, leading international figures are presented alongside a significant group of artists from Bologna and Emilia-Romagna.
Among the most important works, we will present “Flowers” by Andy Warhol, a unique work from 1964 in acrylic and silkscreen ink on canvas, from the Pio Monti Collection – Rome. It belongs to one of the most celebrated series in Pop Art. Furthermore, the auction will include “Marilyn Monroe (Marilyn)” from 1967 and “Ladies & Gentlemen” from 1975, from the renowned series dedicated to figures from New York’s underground scene.
As regards Italian painting, the selection opens with “Fanciulla” from 1969 by Mario Tozzi, characterised by a refined formal synthesis. This is joined by “Zelda” from 1982 by Antonio Bueno, “Il discorso della montagna” from 1941 by Aligi Sassu and “Il disco” by Virgilio Guidi. Furthermore, the catalogue includes works on paper by Renato Guttusoand the large 1982 landscape by Ubaldo Bartolini, exhibited that same year at the Venice Biennale. Works by Romano Parmeggiani, Ottone Rosai and Mario Sironi complete the overview.
Among the Italian experiences of the post-war period, “Girasoli” from 1970 by Michelangelo Pistoletto stands out, a silkscreen print on mirror-polished steel. In the work, image, environment and viewer enter into a direct relationship. Furthermore, particular interest is devoted to the group of graphic works by Mario Schifano, including the complete portfolio “Monocromo (Autoritratto)” and other subjects representative of his visual repertoire.
Sculpture is represented by “Silenzio n. 3: Quel giorno che…” from 1985 by Raimondo Rimondi, a large bronze and steel composition with a strong narrative presence. Furthermore, the catalogue includes “Cavallo Normanno” by Antonio Ligabue, after a bronze by Luciano Minguzzi, and “Ultima cena” by Leonardo Pivi. As regards contemporary photography, the catalogue includes a series of eight Cibachrome works by Luisa Lambri and three intense portraits by Dino Pedriali dedicated to Pier Paolo Pasolini.
Finally, the catalogue closes with a selection linked to the artistic scene of Bologna and Emilia-Romagna. The artists represented include Pompilio Mandelli, Ilario Rossi, Pirro Cuniberti, Sergio Vacchi, Mario Nanni, Concetto Pozzati and Cleto Tomba. Overall, Auction 96 offers an articulated journey through Pop Art, twentieth-century Italian painting, artist’s multiples, sculpture and contemporary photography.
