Auction 75 – BOLOGNESE DIMORE

Auction 75 – BOLOGNESE DIMORE

Gregory’s new event will take place in October, offering an intriguing selection of furniture and antique paintings, along with works from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. All the items come from important private residences in our city, and we have selected significant works from renowned Bolognese masters from the 19th and 20th centuries.

The selection of works from Bolognese Dimore includes five pieces by Luigi Bertelli: the grand “Vallata di Reno”, oil on canvas from 1896, exhibited at the 16th Venice Biennale in 1928 during the Italian 19th-century painting exhibition, and also in Bologna in 1985 as part of the monographic exhibition dedicated to the artist; “View of Bellagio”, from the early 20th century and published in the artist’s catalog curated by Nino Bertocchi; “Il Lago” 1901; “Pineta”, 1901; and “Fiume al tramonto” a pastel on cardboard from 1905.

There are also examples of works by his son, Flavio Bertelli: “Paesaggio con casolare” purchased from the Forni Gallery in Bologna; “Dopo la pioggia” exhibited during the retrospective dedicated to the artist on the 10th anniversary of his passing by the Bologna Art Circle; “Il Rubicone” from 1936; and “Il Parroco” a charming watercolor on paper.

Other works include Fabio Fabbi’s “Portrait of an Odalisque” and “Figures in the Forest”; Carlo Corsi’s “Figura seduta in giardino” exhibited at the opening show of the Farini Art Studio in 1975; Alfredo Savini’s “Scena classica”; Alessandro Guardassoni’s “Figura di spalle” from 1856 and “Conversione di S. Agostino” a preparatory watercolor for the fresco located in the Church of St. Augustine in Bologna; Giovanni Piancastelli’s “Il Collezionista”.

Paintings from the Triveneto region also testify to the period: Pietro Fragiacomo, two oils on canvas depicting “Barche in laguna”; Emma Ciardi’s “Paesaggio Settecentesco con architettura e figure”; and Emanuele Brugnoli’s “Scorcio veneziano”.

We also highlight Giulio Aristide Sartorio with “Paludi Pontine” from 1908, as well as a beautiful example of Tuscan painting from Giovanni Bartolena with “Paesaggio di campagna con figure e cavalli” an oil on board measuring 52×103 cm; Ludovico Tommasi with “Scena di campagna con buoi” a divisionist work, and Luigi Gioli with “Scena di campagna”

Among the antique paintings, the intriguing “Salome with the Head of John the Baptist”, oil on canvas by the Leonardesque Bernardo Luini, stands out. Another version of the subject is known to be exhibited at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.

Among the furniture pieces is an important 12-panel Coromandel screen with dimensions H cm 267x49x2, decorated on both sides: one side depicting a detailed wedding scene, the other a naturalistic representation with birds and plant motifs. The term “Coromandel” originates from the coastal region of India, from where screens and other furniture from China were shipped to European markets, driven by the French passion for “chinoiserie” that developed from the 18th century and extended into the early 20th century and beyond.

The furniture selection also includes credenzas, trumeaux, writing desks, dressers, and mirrors.

Among the sculptures, we feature the “Allegories of Water and Fire” bronzes with a dark patina from the 19th century by Louis Sauvageau or “Vici” by Auguste Moreau. Additionally, we mention the terracottas by Cleto Tomba, depicting characters from the Nativity.

We inform all our clients that the auction will take place on Tuesday, October 15 and that participation will be possible in the auction room, online, or via written or telephone bids. Prior to the event, it will be possible to view the lots in person during the exhibition held on October 9 – 10 – 11 – 14, with the following hours: 9:30 AM – 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM – 6:30 PM.
