Silver Jewels

The auction 69 | SILVER & JEWELS. The auction took place on Tuesday, March 19th, 2024, starting at 3:00 PM, and it was possible to participate online or through written and telephone bids. All presented lots could be available for in-person viewing on the exhibition days (Thursday, 14th, Friday, 15th, and Monday, 18th) according to the following schedule: 9:30 AM – 1:00 PM, 2:00 PM – 6:30 PM.

The first part of the catalogue was dedicated to silverware: the collection ranged from intricately crafted candelabras to precious tableware sets, vases, trays, centerpieces, and bon bon holders. Particularly noteworthy within the selection were some works by the silversmiths Stefani of Bologna: an important and ancient alms basket (lot 14), two magnificently chased frames (lots 7 and 8), and a collection of dishes signed “Ale Stefani” (lots 313233343536373839). These objects testified to the elegance and skill that has made the Bolognese goldsmith tradition renowned, recounting stories of a bygone era of opulence and sophistication. Among others, there were also some leaves and a flower bearing the signature of Gianmaria Buccellati, one of the greatest heirs of the Italian goldsmith tradition (lots 15161719). Buccellati has left an indelible mark with pieces that combine artistic beauty and impeccable craftsmanship.

The catalogue then continued with an interesting selection of jewelry from a private collection, among which some rings (lots 165166167) and a pendant (lot 164) stand out, designed by the artist Mario Radice, one of the leading figures of Italian abstract art, who has imprinted his classic geometries in gold with these pieces. The jewelry selection included a wide range of both contemporary and antique pieces, featuring corals and pearls, some cameos and rings, necklaces, bracelets, and earrings with diamonds, emeralds, sapphires, topazes, jades…
