AUCTION 62 | GIULIANO GIULIANI AT CA’ VECCHIA. Artist and artworks

Gregory’s celebrates the Bolognese artist Giuliano Giuliani (Bologna, 1924 – 2017) with an auction that took place on September 5th, 2023, at 3:00 PM, and was accessible for online or phone participation.

Giuliano Giuliani attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, specializing in sculpture, and dedicated his artistic career to creating large-scale sculptural works, predominantly in wood, which have been exhibited in important modern art galleries and international museums.

Some of his most notable public works include:

  • “Incontro di sguardi” (Meeting of Gazes), which has been displayed over the years at the Mausoleum of Guglielmo Marconi in Sasso Marconi, Piazza Azzarita in Bologna, the courtyard of the Bolognese Classical High School Marco Minghetti, and in the cloister of San Giovanni in Monte (together with “Intesa”). It is currently located in the garden of Rocca Roveresca in Senigallia along with the sculpture “Stretta di mano” (Handshake), titled “Pensiero di pace” (Thought of Peace) in this case.
  • “Stretta di mano” was also placed for a period in the presidency of the Classical High School Minghetti, and a version of it in concrete and white marble grit is in Marzabotto.
  • “Elicoide rosso” (Red Helix), composed of red metal pipes, located in the garden in front of the CIAB company, but also in a wooden version in the garden of Ca’ Vecchia.
  • “Forma 30”, created for the Casor company garden in Castelmaggiore.
  • “Vita”, still visible in Casalecchio di Reno, a sculpture composed of 96 poles extracted from the streets of Bologna and assembled in a spherical spiral.

Apart from being known as an artist, Giuliani is renowned among the residents of Bologna for founding “Elios” in 1953, a company specializing in heliographic reproductions, digital prints, and computer processing, whose logo is still displayed in Via Testoni. Elios was a reference point for printing and graphics in Bologna for decades, and through this activity, Giuliano Giuliani managed to showcase his skill in creating innovative machinery and constantly experimenting with new printing techniques.

With this auction, we aim to celebrate an artist and a Bolognese figure through the selection of 12 fascinating works, including:

  • “The Zodiacal Clock” which combines the functional aspect of a clock with an astrological concept.
  • “Icaro”, a mythological and timeless representation of the primal desire for flight.
  • “Pomona”, inspired by the goddess of fertility and her soft forms.
  • “Can Can”, a dynamic and highly expressive piece reminiscent of the leg movements of dancers.
  • “Stretta di mano” (also known as “Forma 20”), Giuliani’s first significant wooden sculpture and a starting point for his exploration of the sphere, which holds a special meaning in the evolution of his artistic career.

There are also other spherical sculptures made from different types of wood, a material beloved by the artist.

These works reflect Giuliano Giuliani’s artistic sensitivity and originality, and the diversity of themes and techniques employed in his sculptures speaks to the depth of his talent and artistic exploration.

One of the distinctive features of Giuliani’s sculptural art is his ability to create works that interact significantly with the surrounding space. His sculptures are not mere isolated objects; rather, they inhabit the real space, becoming an integral part of the environment in which they are placed.

For this reason, on Friday, September 1st, the public will have the opportunity to view the works by appointment at Ca’ Vecchia in Crespellano. This adds an element of uniqueness and significance to the event: being able to admire an artist’s works in a place so intimate and connected to his life and artistic production can make the experience even more engaging for the participants.

This approach allows the audience to become not only spectators but also protagonists of the artistic experience. By walking among the sculptures, the public can establish an intimate connection with Giuliani’s creations and the surrounding environment. The sculptures become part of the visitor’s experience, allowing them to interact with them physically and emotionally.
