Gregory’s 83rd auction offers a curated journey through modern and contemporary art, featuring works from Italian private collections spanning the entire 20th century to the expressive languages of the present day. The catalogue opens with a significant group of works by Roberto Crippa, including a striking large-scale Spirale in oil on canvas. Also featured is a boxed composition by Arman, created with brushes and acrylic, perfectly aligned with his accumulative visual language, and a monumental canvas by Giovanni Frangi, who interprets the landscape through layered and gestural painting. Key presences also include Mario Schifano, Gianni Dova, and Giorgio Tonelli, whose work is featured on the cover of the catalogue.
A special focus is devoted to Pompilio Mandelli, represented by paintings from the private collection of the artist’s heirs. These rare early works, seldom seen on the market, document his transition from full figuration toward progressive informal abstraction. Mandelli was both pupil and friend to Giorgio Morandi and Virgilio Guidi, both represented in this sale. Noteworthy is a work by Guidi, personally gifted to Mandelli, as noted on the back of the painting.
The auction also includes a rich selection of mixed media works, works on paper, and paintings that reflect the diversity and complexity of contemporary Italian art — a narrative that moves between memory, experimentation, and identity.
